White powder on engine!

I've had my 09 plate Mini Cooper D for 5 weeks and I lifted the hood for the first time today to fill the washer water and I noticed white powder all over my engine! Is this normal I'm new to mini

My guess would be it's just aluminum oxide, if your engine is brand new and has never been exposed to the elements before.

Aluminum oxide forms on the surface (kind of like rust on iron) and actually forms a protective layer for the aluminum underneath (unlike rust, which flakes off exposing more iron to rust). You can wipe it off, but don't try to scrape it off. Nothing to worry about.
